Lig Wankelend

Linguistic Atlas of South Africa
0R235,00This atlas maps various time-space dimensions of South Africa’s remarkable linguistic diversity to cast the geography of language within the conceptual framework of geolinguistics. It shows how historical patterns of spatial language preponderance have developed to produce current patterns and allows understanding of the way landscape has become regionally ingrained in the vocabulary of languages. Here language is cast as a barometer of the social dynamics processes of space and place: spatial convergence, regional competition, expansion and dominance, segregation and assimilation, ethnicity, social ecology, language identity, social interaction and migration trends.

Listening to Literature
0R300,00OI think Listening to Literature promises to be a major contribution towards a clearer understanding of our literature as seen and understood from within its dynamic cultural context. It has the potential of being a rare and crucial intervention in the development of literature and literary criticism in South Africa. That also applies to the illuminating of points of intersection of, and interaction between literary art and aspects of other forms of artistic expression.O

Living between Science and Belief
0R270,00Most thoughtful people live in an interregnum between science and religion. Traditional religious answers concerning the beginning, purpose, and end of life are questioned by the natural sciences, with neuroscience conceivably constituting the last frontier where skeptics and believers explore common ground. The question concerns the nature of reflective and creative moments in life. Can these be reduced to the intersect between the nerve cells and molecules of the physical brain? Does this account for the human sense of mystery, or even spirituality? Is there a nexus between the physical and unknown dimensions of existence? The mutation in the history of theism suggest that progressive theology in the West may be set for a further change.E

Living with Little Monsters
0R350,00The tragic coronavirus pandemic of 2020-2022 opened the worldOs eyes anew to the urgent need for a better understanding of microorganisms, whether viruses or bacteria, in order to develop best practices for reducing the risk of dangerous infections. Ideally, every household should have sufficient knowledge of how viruses and other kinds of microorganisms can damage human and animal health. Now, with exquisite timing, Prof Pieter Gouws at the Centre for Food Safety (CFS), in the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University, and food scientist Dr Michaela van den Honert, have collaborated on a scientific household guide for Oliving with little monstersO, introducing the reader to an array of potentially harmful microorganisms. Nor have the authors neglected the bacteria which play a positive role, for example, in the human gut. They have gathered the latest scientific evidence for an extensive set of descriptions of specific microbes to watch out for and how best to minimise the risk of being infected by them. By so doing, they can empower ordinary consumers, along with their families, to live healthier, less risky, daily lives.
