Grade R in Perspective is a structured academic guide for students, educators and practitioners in the field of early child development. It is compiled according to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Declaration (CAPS) of the National Department of Education 2011 and presents the latest tendencies of international sources. The focus is put on preparing the student to understand the principles of the informal teaching approach and to implement them. Clear directions are given to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes in the young child so that each learner can achieve self-realisation. Information is given on organising the classroom and the play area to create optimal learning opportunities for the learners. The different levels of development and cultures of the learners are taken into consideration. Valuable suggestions for teaching in practice are illustrated with appropriate examples and photos.

In this volume friends, colleagues and students give acknowledgement to Prof. Dolf Britz on the occasion of his 70th birthday for his many years of labour in the fi eld of church history and church polity. Prof. BritzOs labour is not just academic in nature, but can best be described as the service of a friend service to the fi eld of higher education and to the Church in Africa. The volume refl ects something of the broad interest that characterises Prof. BritzOs labour from the history of the Reformation to the history of the VOC, from church polity to church historiography, from the Dutch Further Reformation to the question of race in South Africa. Therein the authors travel with Prof. Britz on the gravel roads of history undiscovered roads which yield so much reward.

At STIAS, the OHealth in TransitionO theme includes a programme to address the epidemic rise in the incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, coronary heart disease and stroke in Africa. The aim is to advance awareness, research capacity and knowledge translation of science related to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) as a means of preventing NCDs in future generations.

Application of DOHaD science is a promising avenue for prevention, as this field is identifying how health and nutrition from conception through the first 1 000 days of life can dramatically impact a developing individualOs future life course, and specifically predicate whether or not they are programmed in infancy to develop NCDs in later life.E

Prevention of NCDs is an essential strategy as, if unchecked, the burden of caring for a growing and ageing population with these diseases threatens to consume entire health budgets, as well as negatively impact the quality of life of millions.E

Africa in particular needs specific, focussed endeavors to realize the maximal preventive potential of DOHaD science, and a means of generating governmental and public awareness about the links between health in infancy and disease in adult life.E

This volume summarizes the expertise and experience of a leading group of international scientists led by Abdallah Daar brought together at STIAS as part of the OHealth in TransitionO programme.E

Our understanding of racism is that it is the systematic doubt concerning the humanity of the other. It is a means to an end, namely, to pursue the dehumanisation of the other for oneOs sole and exclusive benefit. The doubt is in itself ethically indefensible. Yet, it ultimately acquires the status of an incontrovertible truth around which economic and political life is organised and conducted. This has been and continues to be the reality in South Africa today. The hypothesis of this book is that a philosophical-historical study of racism will reveal that it has only ever been and continues to be white supremacy. In South Africa the actuality of the doubt is that it has always arisen from one side (OwhitenessO) and directed itself against the other (OblacknessO).

Our purpose is to show that racism properly speaking is white supremacy and that it cannot be properly understood without African philosophy.

“In a South African context … condemning apartheid is not enough. To make a non-racial, democratic, inclusive society viable and enduring, much more is required ? of which creative and imaginative theological thinking is not the least. Fundamental theological values and their implications for all the facets of society must be thought through ? not as an academic exercise, but as a grass-roots undertaking ? and the greatest challenge is to act in terms of this new understanding of society.”
