• Faith, Race and Inequality amongst Young Adults in South Africa

Faith, Race and Inequality amongst Young Adults in South Africa

    0

For many young South African adults (often called Oborn freesO), who were born just before or just after the demise of political apartheid, the ongoing realities of poverty and inequality bring to light the question of whether they truly are OfreeO in contemporary South Africa? Their lived experiences of poverty and inequality seem to be in conflict with theologically laden concepts that remain prominent in social and political life, such as reconciliation, forgiveness, justice and restitution. This leads to a bi_directional process of contesting, and being contested, by such notions and discourses. Furthermore, in light of the double legacy of both the church and youth as resisting injustice, this publication seeks to explore the many perspectives from which the Christian faith, race and inequality amongst youth can be brought to light.

For many young South African adults (often called ‘born frees’), who were born just before or just after the demise of political apartheid, the ongoing realities of poverty and inequality bring to light the question of whether they truly are ‘free’ in contemporary South Africa? • Festschrift in honour of Allan Boesak

Festschrift in honour of Allan Boesak

    0

Allan Aubrey Boesak, renowned theologian, anti-apartheid activist and politician, turned 70 on 23 February 2016 and in his honour a number of his friends, colleagues and students contributed to this festschrift. These essays can be regarded as academic commentary, impressionistic overviews or brief notes on the life and work of Allan Boesak. For much of his public life Boesak has been a controversial figure: for the politically oppressed during the apartheid years he represented their anger and resistance; for the politically dominant he was an irritant, a troublesome preacher. The contributors write with unconcealed admiration about Boesak’s theological and political activism, leadership, eloquence and intelligence. His life and his formation as a black liberation theologian are recounted, often framed by the contributor’s view of his prophetic calling.

Fishing for Jonah (anew) introduces students of theology to a wide range of approaches or ‘methods’ in biblical interpretation, drawing on the book of Jonah for illustrations. This thoroughly revised version of Fishing for Jonah (Conradie, Jonker, Lawrie & Arendse, 1992) represents both a contraction and an expansion compared to its predecessor.

In the course of three years, the Globalisation Project has gathered experts from a variety of disciplines to reflect together on globalisation, its origins, its manifestations and consequences, particularly for the Christian religion and for Christian churches today. This second volume on this theme in the Beyers Nauda Series, also represents a selection of papers that were presented at consultations of the Joint Project, in this case during those held at Stellenbosch and Emden, Germany, in 2009.

In this deeply personal book, well-known Cilliers themes including meaning-making, sermons, modern art, colours, Stellenbosch wines, and the Karoo emerge in a surprisingly new way. They connect with intensely happy and severely sad autobiographical moments and are presented in no more than fragments. However, while reading them, the fragments begin to mutually interact with one another, and playfully create a surprisingly existential theology a theology that hooks to your own existence as a reader. Take, read, and savour this tasty book. [Prof. Marcel Barnard]

In this volume friends, colleagues and students give acknowledgement to Prof. Dolf Britz on the occasion of his 70th birthday for his many years of labour in the fi eld of church history and church polity. Prof. BritzOs labour is not just academic in nature, but can best be described as the service of a friend service to the fi eld of higher education and to the Church in Africa. The volume refl ects something of the broad interest that characterises Prof. BritzOs labour from the history of the Reformation to the history of the VOC, from church polity to church historiography, from the Dutch Further Reformation to the question of race in South Africa. Therein the authors travel with Prof. Britz on the gravel roads of history undiscovered roads which yield so much reward.
