What is the link, if any, between race and disease? How did the term baster as Omixed raceO come to be mistranslated from OincestO in the Hebrew Bible? What are the roots of racial thinking in South African universities? How does music fall on the ear of black and white listeners? Are new developments in genetics simply a backdoor for the return of eugenics? For the first time, leading scholars in South Africa from different disciplines take on some of these difficult questions about race, science and society in the aftermath of apartheid. This book offers an important foundation for students pursuing a broader education than what a typical degree provides, and a must-read resource for every citizen concerned about the lingering effects of race and racism in South Africa and other parts of the world.

At STIAS, the OHealth in TransitionO theme includes a programme to address the epidemic rise in the incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, coronary heart disease and stroke in Africa. The aim is to advance awareness, research capacity and knowledge translation of science related to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) as a means of preventing NCDs in future generations.

Application of DOHaD science is a promising avenue for prevention, as this field is identifying how health and nutrition from conception through the first 1 000 days of life can dramatically impact a developing individualOs future life course, and specifically predicate whether or not they are programmed in infancy to develop NCDs in later life.E

Prevention of NCDs is an essential strategy as, if unchecked, the burden of caring for a growing and ageing population with these diseases threatens to consume entire health budgets, as well as negatively impact the quality of life of millions.E

Africa in particular needs specific, focussed endeavors to realize the maximal preventive potential of DOHaD science, and a means of generating governmental and public awareness about the links between health in infancy and disease in adult life.E

This volume summarizes the expertise and experience of a leading group of international scientists led by Abdallah Daar brought together at STIAS as part of the OHealth in TransitionO programme.E

Amid a growing OturnO towards Southern cities, South African urban geographers continue to remind us why and how to attend to local context and draw on theory from elsewhere. Human Geographies of Stellenbosch: Transforming Space, Preserving Place? (edited by Ronnie Donaldson) provides a deep look at crucial questions facing one of South AfricaOs most well-known town-cities. Written from years of local knowledge by scholars at Stellenbosch University, this volume asks what urban transformation means, who it is for, and the politically tantalising question of whether and how we might hold on to some of the old while aspiring towards the new? In a global context in which we are all searching for how to justly remember our messy past, how to decolonise and hold onto what makes places unique, this volume will be of interest to scholars asking such questions in and beyond urban studies.
