Managing Director

Nirode Bramdaw is a publisher, journalist and occasional poet. He read a B. Comm (Law) at the University of Durban-Westville before entering publishing; where he was actively involved in all spheres of content development through to production. He was also the KZN Bureau Chief for the Business Day and wrote regular columns for the Sunday Times, Sunday Independent and The Mercury. Bramdaw serves on the Editorial Boards of Sunpress, UWC Press and Mandela University Press as well as on
relevant industry bodies.

Glenn Hekma holds a Bachelor of Information Science degree specialising in Publishing, which he obtained from the University of Pretoria. After a brief stint teaching in South Korea, he gained experience from the major publishing houses in South Africa, including Juta & Co., Macmillan, Pearson and Oxford University Press. He held roles in editorial, publishing and marketing before taking on his current post to lead the Publishing team at African Sun Media. With over a decade of experience managing multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously, while maintaining a natural editor’s eye for detail and quality control, he brings his calm influence to manage his team and their projects.

Davida van Zyl obtained a B.A. (Drama) from Stellenbosch University with majors in Drama and Afrikaans and minors in Dutch, English and French. Her career in working with text started when she translated various television series for dubbing at the SABC. In 2007, she joined African Sun Media’s publishing team, where she has gained over 12 years’ experience in text design, layout, proofreading and copy editing. In 2016, she completed a semeste course in Editing Methodology, focusing on academic texts, which forms the majority of the manuscripts managed by the publishing section. She is driven by the will to deliver scholarly publications of the highes standard.

Arin Barry obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree specialising in Multimedia Production, Media and Writing, and English from the University of Cape Town. While studying, she started working with text as an editor for VARSITY News and never looked back. After extensive experience in writing news for print and web publications, she became well versed in the intricacies of the news cycle. She further honed her craft working in learning design and B2B marketing fields, while also dabbling in social media content creation and management. This multidisciplinary background has equipped her with a broad skill set and a deep understanding of storytelling techniques across different media platforms that she brings to her role at African Sun Media.

Danielle Delport obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Humanities with a triple major in English Studies, Applied English Language Studies, and Meta Science, from Stellenbosch University. She started her career in the sales and social media management fields, before taking a break to pursue her love for language education by becoming an ESL teacher at the Sogang University Language Programme Institute in South Korea. The global COVID-19 pandemic brought her home, where she settled as a high school English teacher. Longing for a challenge, she entered the editing industry and started off as an English editing intern at Pixelogic Media.

Maylene Dietrich obtained her B.A. from Stellenbosch University with majors in Psychology and Public & Development Management and minors in Sociology and Political Science. Heading up Sales in the Publishing Unit, Maylene is constantly seeking new platforms on which to market the African Sun Media catalogue online and on various scholarly platforms. Having worked at African Sun Media for more than a decade, Maylene is familiar with all aspects of publishing, book sales and administration. She is meticulous and brings various attributes such as time management, the value of discipline and creative collaboration to the table. To her, being an ardent learner is vital in order to succeed.

Senior Designer

Edward Mitchell holds a National Diploma in Graphic Design, which he read at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has more than a decade of experience in creativity. As such, he is proficient in all the design software required to execute his creative output. He is currently engaged in the entire gamut of graphic design including estimating, client interaction, managing production schedules, setting up print-ready files, pre-press and of late has taken to video production and animation for significant clients including the Stellenbosch University Technology Office and the Agricultural Research Council. Given his qualifications and experience, Mitchell is an expert in quick and accurate turnaround of creative briefs.
